Confusion!!

February 20, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Back in the day, when I was a spiritely 18-year-old I was convinced that my life was as confusing as a computer programming language. I was positive that with age, like wine, things would only get better. This retort obviously didn’t get the much-needed attention I wanted but instead I was politely told that life only gets confusing, as you grow older. This most unexpected remark was uttered by a 26-year-old debonair who used to intimidate the very hair that seems to amuse him now. I scoffed, yes my brazenness and a bit of intimidation getting the better of me, only to be regretted years later.

Now at 22, I can’t help but feel that life is far worse than it was at 18, but we live and learn and things get easier to handle, that’s true for me, and it should be true for everybody else. But I’m sadly mistaken; it’s not, apparently.

N at 30 feels awfully devastated at the latest turn of events. Work pressures and other issues are just driving her to a point of no return and I feel helpless. It’s worse because she is an only child. It’s worse because no one’s pushing her. It doesn’t help that she can’t talk openly with her parents. It’s scary that she thinks everyone’s malicious. So back to a chat with the equally challenging debonair turned chum, lifesaver, partner in all things evil and confidante. He stressed over and over again that it must be tough being 30 and a woman. That I find now all too believable. So what do I do in a situation like this, advice her about the finer points of working smarter (no way), rely on God to help (can’t really count on him) or just simply listen and support her in whatever she wants to do (that’s the way to go). I’ve been thinking this through, really there isn’t much any of us could do, it’s an inner battle, one only she can fight. Age doesn’t help, it makes things worse, with growing grey hair comes a lack of self confidence (not true in every case) and oh you must, absolutely must have a support system. I know who makes me laugh, who gives me the best advice, who pushes me beyond the push-able limit, who will hold me when I cry and you get the drift. While typing that I must say I really do have the most wonderful support system, no wonder I pull through every time I go into one of my many phases.

With that I wrap up this rambling post. Damn I worry when menopause hits.

Kudos

I heard his name, then mine. I heard countless voices congratulating. It was all too surreal.

We won!

The competition I wouldn’t say was easy. When we first started I was thrilled to work on the topic, a topic I would say I’m not entirely unfamiliar with, it also helped that we both share a common distaste of the topic. So things started rolling as we guzzled on Coke. We progressed from relatively boring ideas to a good one with half an hour to spare before handing our work in, then suddenly we realized we missed something. Panic and stress set in and we were both trying really hard to salvage our thinking. After many futile attempts we agreed to go ahead with what we had and then sell the idea as best as we could. Damn one line of copy missed, and that was enough to push us from being in the game to the sidelines.

The wait for the presentation was a killer. I felt a surge of panic take over and my hyperventilating partner who tried really hard to hide his emotions (even the best of actors can’t pull off faking real emotions) had sudden toilet rushes.

‘Number 9’

and we were on. The presentation went off well. The judges looked relatively happy so maybe we weren’t that bad. I was strangely calm and Pokey was poised, only I could see the nervousness in his eyes. He did a wonderful job with the presentation and held himself pretty darn well. So I’m absolutelymarvelouslythrilled that we won and I’m undeniably happy to share this amazing experience and victory with Pokey and I’m truly proud of us. We’re such a splendid team, it’s as good as a pair of perfectly fitting jeans ;)

Kudos to us, again Pokes!

Slumdog Millionaire

February 6, 2009 · 3 Comments

One word – OVERRATED!!!

More words - Reality TV shows, quite the ‘IN’ thing these days so it was about time someone made a movie out of it. When I first heard about it from friends, raving about how great it was to articles about it and the obvious – awards, I couldn’t wait to watch it. Yes that meant days of trying to find a good copy and after finding one to find out that it didn’t work on MY DVD player. After severe bouts of anger and a kind friend later I settle down with a copy of the movie that works.

Verdict – It was good. Not great! Loved the way they brought the title on screen, Dev Patel with his disguised British accent was good. Not great. The music was all right; it definitely didn’t live up to the vibe I expected. Now on that musical note I must mention that MIA’s lyrics and music worked absolutely well at the beginning, such a shocking surprise for me, since I dislike (hate I’m told is a strong word) her music.

Yeah so Slumdog is overrated. Who the hell am I to be making such a statement!

I love cricket matches, even the ones we lose.

I managed to successfully cough up my vocals cords, get tipsy enough to hug random people, squeezed a friend’s boob when I tried to keep myself from tumbling to the ground, then said crazy stuff to some people (thankfully the boys thought I was cute in all my tipsiness), learnt a few bad songs, got into a fight with the cops (not my fault) and had a freaking rollicking time.

I wanna go for another match soon!!

I wish I could do better by you,
’cause that’s what you deserve
You sacrifice so much of your life
In order for this to work.

While I’m off chasing my own dreams
Sailing around the world
Please know that I’m yours to keep
My beautiful girl

When you cry a piece of my heart dies
Knowing that I may have been the cause
If you were to leave
Fulfill someone else’s dreams
I think I might totally be lost
You don’t ask for no diamond rings no delicate string of pearls
That’s why I wrote this song to sing
My beautiful girl

for the longest time I’ve been listening to Mraz and I was in love with the lyrics, the music and HIM. But the love affair was not meant to be because Cookie introduced me to City and Colour. I love the above lyrics, maybe because it’s talking to me and only ME.

Anyway youtube it and have a listen, he might even be talking to you, who knows?

Missed!

February 2, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I missed been kissed by the sunny ray’s in the morning.

I missed staring out into the Ocean.

I missed penning silly verses to tunes strummed on R’s guitar.

I missed laughing at the so-called elitists with their not so wonderful ways.

I missed spotting the ancient facades, and intricate designs that adorn the houses.

I missed the long walks along the shore.

I missed the rock climb in the night and the long starry gazes at the sky.

Oh well I missed the GLF and a trip to Unawatuna with 2 wonderful friends. I had my reasons for not going so I shouldn’t feel stupidly upset over it. Oh and there is reason to be happy, we are going to do the trip all over again in March with few more additions and this time like I told the guys we are gonna break in (await details)!!

I missed out on the Green Belt this weekend too. Laziness got the better of me but next time I’ll be the first one to sign up and that’s a promise!
